Where It All Began: Our Very First Pumpkin Patch

Our very first year growing pumpkins was an adventure I’ll never forget—a journey my daughter and I shared every step of the way. While you may see truckloads of pumpkins at The Farm Stand come fall, this patch is so much more than that. It’s about memories, hard work, and the pure joy of watching life grow from a tiny seed.

When my dad gifted me a small half-acre “3-corner” field that had been sitting idle, I knew exactly what I wanted to do—I was going to start my very own pumpkin patch. Equipped with a hoe, shovel, garden hose, stock tank, and an old farm truck, I dove in. And, of course, I had the best farmhand I could ask for—my daughter.

Together, we built over 500 hills by hand, carefully planted our seeds, and waited… and waited. The rain never came, so I had to get creative. I filled a 300-gallon stock tank from the well, loaded it into Grandpa’s rusty old farm truck, and slowly drove it down the lane to the patch—water sloshing everywhere. Farmers in the area even called my dad to offer me theirs, but I was determined to make it work on my own.

Watering alone took over eight hours, multiple trips back and forth, and a gravity-fed garden hose setup. But finally, after weeks of dedication, those stubborn seeds began to sprout. The watering routine became our ritual, and when I wasn’t hauling water, I was battling the weeds. Eventually, I realized some battles are meant to be surrendered, and I let nature have its course.

Looking back, the patch was far from perfect—more dirt than I liked, more weeds than I could manage—but what anyone else might call a crop failure, I call a success. We learned, we persevered, and by harvest time, we had over 1,000 pumpkins! Tears of joy, laughter, and pure excitement filled the air as we gathered the fruits of our labor.

This year, our pumpkin patch is growing even more. Along with the traditional Jack O’ Lanterns, we’re focusing on specialty pumpkins, gourds, and corn—mini varieties, vibrant fall colors, warty and stacking pumpkins, and pie pumpkins too. You’ll be able to find them all at The Farm Stand this fall! Sharing the results of our hard work with the community is a feeling that truly warms our hearts—proving that to some it may be “just a pumpkin,” but to us, it’s a memory we’ll treasure forever.

And as always, we have big plans for the farm. Future seasons will bring potted mums, straw bales, and more fall décor. For now, come enjoy our pumpkins, gourds, and corn stalks, and share in the joy of the season with us.

Because this pumpkin patch isn’t just about pumpkins—it’s about family, hard work, and the little moments that grow into lifelong memories.
