Digging into the Dirt: Life on the Wendland Family Farm

Welcome to the Wendland Family Farm—our little slice of Iowa soil where flowers, hard work, and family memories bloom side-by-side. Tucked just outside West Point, this small but mighty farm is built on intention, grit, and a whole lot of love. And while our flower fields and farm stands are well-known in the community, the story runs deeper than what you see on the surface. Today, let’s dig into what truly makes life here special—and why choosing local matters more than ever.

Where Family and Farming Meet

Small family farms carry a heartbeat all their own. Unlike large, commercial operations, farms like ours are powered by hands-on care, sustainable choices, and genuine connections with the people we serve. Every bloom, every loaf of sourdough, every market day moment carries a piece of our family story.

We grow thoughtfully, seasonally, and with purpose—always aiming to give our community the freshest flowers, the most authentic experiences, and a farm you can feel proud to support.

A Flower Farm in Full Bloom

If you’ve spent any time in our little corner of the county, you know the flowers are the soul of this place. From sunrise walks through dew-soaked rows to the armloads of zinnias, dahlias, basil, and sunflowers filling our farm stand, the blooms bring joy to every season.

Whether you're decorating your home, surprising someone special, or joining us for a U-Pick or workshop, our flower fields are a space to slow down and reconnect with the simple magic of growing things.

About Our Pumpkins—A Family Tradition

Every year we grow pumpkins for —for the families, the kids, for decorating the stands, and for a bit of fall fun right here at home. Our pumpkin patch is not open to the public, and we like to keep that space private for our family memories and farm operations.

But don’t worry—we always bring pumpkins and fall goodies to the farm stands when the season rolls around, so you can still enjoy a little Wendland Family Farm fall magic without wandering the patch.

Why Local Matters More Than Ever

Every bouquet, baked good, and fall pumpkin you buy from a local farm keeps small-town agriculture alive. It supports families like ours, sustains rural economies, and makes sure diversity in farming doesn’t disappear.

When you choose local, you’re not just buying a product—you’re investing in community, sustainability, and the future of small farms.

Growing with Intention: Our Sustainable Practices at Wendland Family Farm

Healthy soil grows healthy things. Around here, we’re big believers in working with the land, not against it.

We rely on:

  • Crop rotation

  • Cover cropping

  • Compost

  • Low-spray, responsible growing

  • Pollinator-friendly practices

These choices keep our soil thriving, protect local ecosystems, and allow blooms and produce to flourish season after season.

Seasonal Experiences That Bring Us Together

From spring bouquets to summertime U-Picks, from farmers market mornings to fall stand days—the farm is woven into community rhythms all year long. Our workshops, events, and markets are built to be hands-on, heartfelt, and full of connection.

Every season brings a new reason to gather, grow, and celebrate the simple beauty of farm life.

Digging a Little Deeper

Life on the Wendland Family Farm is grounded in purpose—growing good things, serving our neighbors well, and honoring the traditions that got us here. Flowers, community, sustainable practices, and a whole lot of dirt-under-the-fingernails work shape everything we do.

When you support our farm, you become part of that story. You help us keep a little Iowa magic alive. And for that, we’re endlessly grateful.
