Behind the Blooms: A Real Day on Wendland Family Farm

Ever wonder what really goes on behind those big, happy buckets of blooms at Wendland Family Farm? Spoiler alert: it’s a whole lot more than “picking pretty flowers.” It’s early mornings, muddy boots, quiet gratitude, and more love poured into these rows than most people ever see.

Let me take you behind the scenes for a day on the farm — messy bun, Crocs + socks, coffee in hand.

Sunrise & Seedlings

The day kicks off just after dawn, when the world is still soft and quiet. Before the hustle begins, I slip out to check on the babies — the tiny seedlings tucked safely in their trays, growing under just-right conditions. These little guys are the future dahlias, peonies, sunflowers, zinnias… all the blooms that end up in your bouquets.

It’s slow, intentional work. But goodness, it’s magic.

Into the Rows

Once the daily and weekly plans are laid out, it’s go time. Row by row, bed by bed — planting, pruning, pulling, fixing, hoping, redoing. It’s equal parts skill, sweat, and creativity. Color and texture matter. Timing matters. Soil health matters. Every plant gets a little moment of attention.

Watering, weeding, checking for pests, cheering on the ladybugs, gently escorting aphids off the premises… we keep things as organic and earth-friendly as possible. This farm is an ecosystem, and we take care of it like family.

Harvest Time — The Best Time

By mid-morning, it’s time to harvest. Clippers, buckets, and good vibes.

Harvesting is its own art — picking each stem at just the right stage so bouquets last long and look their best. Not too tight, not too blown open, not past their prime. Just right.

The rows fill your senses — color, scent, the quiet hum of nature doing what it does best.

This part never gets old.

Bouquets, Orders & All the Bloom Business

After harvesting, it’s time to sort, hydrate, and build arrangements. Every bouquet for a customer, event, home, office, or surprise “I love you” is made with intention and a whole lot of heart.

Freshness and quality matter here — no mass-produced anything, ever. Just local blooms, grown with love, arranged by hand.

And beyond bouquets, we open our gates to the community — workshops, tours, Kids Club, market days. Teaching people about flowers, soil, sustainability, and small-town agriculture is one of my favorite parts of this job.

The Quiet Evening Walk

Even after the buckets are scrubbed and the tools are put away, I usually end the evening with a slow walk through the rows.

The sun sets, the air settles, and there’s this deep sense of gratitude — for the blooms, for the hard work, for the people who support local farms, and for another day spent doing something I truly love.

Why It Matters, Behind the Blooms

Behind every bouquet from Wendland Family Farm is a whole story — early mornings, muddy knees, weather worries, tiny victories, sustainable practices, community support, and a whole lot of heart.

So, the next time you bring home a bouquet, whether from here or another local grower, know this: you’re holding hours of care, passion, and hope in your hands - that's what is behind the blooms.

You’re supporting a way of life that’s deeply rooted in nature, community, and the simple joys that make small-town living so special.

And for that — I’m truly grateful.
