Let’s talk pellets!

Bunnies under 3 months are given unlimited access to pellets so they can grow. Once a bunny reaches 3 months, it’s a good idea to start cutting back on pellets - to an extent! See what I do at the bottom of this post!

Adult rabbits only need 1/4 - 1/2 cups of pellets per day. It is imperative to feed your bunny quality, hay-based (alfalfa hay/meal for young bunnies or timothy hay/meal for adult bunnies is the #1 ingredient). There are a lot of low-quality rabbit pellets on the market that are actually unhealthy to even feed your bunnies. Also, quality pellets should be green in color, not brown, and smell fresh. Some great quality brands of pellets are Kalmbach, Oxbow, Small Pet Select, and Sherwood.

Do NOT feed your bun fiesta mixes (pellets with colorful bits mixed in) or commercial treats, as they often contain…

Sourdough Facts

  • Sourdough has an enticing, tangy, flavor.

  • Sourdough is a term that refers to both bread and the starter used to make it. The sourdough starter begins with a combination of flour and water.

  • When flour is mixed with liquid, lactobacilli bacteria, and wild yeast - the flour and your environment start working together. This process generates the by-products that cause bread to rise and its rich flavor.

  • The signature flavor comes from the friendly bacteria and yeast, which produces flavorful lactic and acetic acid in rising bread dough.

  • Create your own starter and experience how it becomes part of the family - a living part of your home that thrives on flour, water, and lots of love (and grace). If you are gluten-free (welcome to the club!) you can create your very own gluten-free sourdough starter. However, many with IBS, gluten sensitivity, or gluten intolerance can handle sourdough…

Hay is 80% of a rabbit’s diet. It’s the MOST important part of a rabbit’s daily intake and should be available for them to eat and nibble on at all times. It keeps the digestive tract moving and prevents GI stasis. Unlimited grass hay, such as timothy or orchard should be fed daily.

Usually, a rabbit will eat a bundle of hay around the same size as his/her body in a day (some eat more). Put the hay in or over the litter box. Make sure that the hay you have consists of nice long strands and smells fresh. If it is a little dusty, shake it out before giving it to your bunny.

I highly recommend Timothy hay as it is higher in fiber and promotes healthy digestion.

All of our bunnies eat unlimited Timothy hay. I recommend Standlee, Oxbow or Small Pet Select brands. Local sources are also…

Happy Monday, Friends! Let's talk about sourdough benefits! I've shared my story on why Sourdough became a true journey for me, now it's your turn! Let us know why you decided to take a ride on the sourdough train!

Sourdough Benefits

  • Sourdough bread is the easiest bread to digest because of the fermentation that occurs when the grain mixtures use bacteria already present in the grains or pick up wild yeasts and bacteria from the environment.

  • Sourdough is a long process to make bread, but well worth the effort in digestibility and health benefits - 48-hours of slow fermentation can destroy 97% of the gluten.

  • Sourdough contains naturally occurring probiotics due to lactic acid fermentation, which helps feed the “good” bacteria in your intestines and aids in digestion.

  • Sourdough may aid in blood sugar management. The fermentation process and higher fiber content makes sourdough a useful option and limits blood…
